Repository Description: Established in 1985, the Westchester County Archives, a unit of the Westchester County Department of Information Technology is the central repository for the historic public records of Westchester County, New York, dating from 1680 to the present. These materials document the people who produced our county's laws, chronicle the growth of the county, and reveal many milestones in its individual citizens' lives.
The Archives holds over 275 series of paper records, ranging from naturalizations, wills, estate inventories, and deeds – heavily used by genealogical researchers – to the papers of the County Executives, proceedings of the Board of Supervisors and Board of Legislators, and reports, correspondence and other materials generated by several county departments, particularly the Parks and Health departments. Additional holdings include over 60,000 prints, negatives, lantern slides and other images dating from 1909 to the present organized into eight photographic collections and more than 35,000 maps and plans dating from 1774 to the present. Job Description: The Westchester County Archives seeks to hire an individual to work on a variety of independent and collaborative projects. This position seeks to provide a student who is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science or some related variation, or who has recently graduated, with summer work experience. It is anticipated that the individual hired for this position will work on improving access to collections through (1) the preparation and/or correction of box and folder lists, (2) the processing of court records, and (3) the processing of twentieth century records of the Board of Supervisor / Board of Legislators. Other projects may be assigned based on the needs of the Archives / interests of the individual hired.
Job Requirements: Qualified applicants will possess an academic or practical background in Archives or History. A strong academic record combined with previous archival experience, including arrangement and description of archival materials, is preferred. Current students or recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
Ideal candidates are highly motivated, able to work independently, with strong attention to detail, excellent proofreading skills, and with excellent effective written and verbal communication skills. Excellent computer skills a must. Must have physical ability to push fully-loaded book carts, handle heavy or oversize volumes and be able to lift 40 lbs.
