workshop - Examination of Photographic Print Materials

*Advanced Professional Development Workshops* *Extraordinary Ubiquity – Examination of Photographic Print Materials* *Location:* Canadian Conservation Institute, Ottawa, Ontario *Date:* October 1–4, 2012 *Cost:* Includes coffee breaks and lunches Early Bird Registration (before June 1, 2012) - CAN$700 for Canadian participants (includes HST) - CAN$875 for all others Regular Registration (by September 11, 2012) - CAN$800 for Canadian participants (includes HST) - CAN$1000 for all others Registration is now open. Please contact CCIif you have any questions. *Principle Instructors:* *Ryan Boatright – Atelier Boba, Paris Greg Hill – Canadian Conservation Institute* Photography was introduced in the early 19th century, and many different photographic processes have been developed since that time. Until recently, most of these were based upon the light sensitivity of metallic salts, predominantly silver halides. In the latter part of the 20th century, digital-based imaging technologies emerged and began competing with conventional photographs. Today, they dominate the market. Photographic prints document virtually all aspects of our lives; they were produced in the tens of millions in the 19th century and in the hundreds of millions from the 20th century onwards. However, in spite of this extraordinary ubiquity of both conventional and digital photographic prints, their chemistry, technology, and long-term preservation requirements are not always fully understood by those charged with the responsibility for their care and conservation. This 4-day workshop will help those responsible for the long-term preservation of photograph collections (e.g. archivists, curators, collection managers, and conservators) maximize their capacity to make informed decisions. Principal instructors Ryan Boatright (Atelier Boba, Paris) and Greg Hill (Canadian Conservation Institute) will use formal presentations, hands-on print viewings, and Web-based tools to introduce participants to the many different types of conventional and digital printing processes used throughout the history of photography. Process identification techniques, mechanisms of deterioration, and the factors that come into play when making decisions on storage and handling will all be examined. Participants will also have an opportunity to produce a photograph using an historic process, and will be provided with a conventional and digital print sample set. http://www.cci-icc.gc.ca/pd-dp/adpw-ppn/index-eng.aspx

Greetings to everyone!

We are now accepting submissions for iConference 2012, our seventh annual gathering of scholars, researchers, and professionals who share an interest in the critical information issues of contemporary society.

The iConference will include peer-reviewed papers, posters, alternative events, and workshops—all intended to push the boundaries of information studies, explore core concepts and ideas, and create new technological and conceptual configurations. Our four-day event takes place in downtown Toronto, February 7-10, 2012. The conference theme is: Culture * Design * Society.

Authors and organizers can now submit papers, poster abstracts, alternative events proposals, and workshop proposals using our secure submissions website: http://bit.ly/iconf12sub. All submitting authors must provide basic information and agree to copyright parameters as a condition of acceptance and publication. Papers and poster abstracts will be published in the ACM Digital Library.

In addition, a Doctoral Student Colloquium is being organized, with funding from the National Science Foundation. Applications for the colloquium are now being accepted. Learn more at http://www.ischools.org/iConference12/doctoral/. A Junior Faculty & Postdoc Colloquium is also in the works.

The iConference series is sponsored by the iSchools, a growing association of more than 30 Schools, Faculties and Colleges in North America, Europe and Asia—however, affiliation with the iSchools is not a prerequisite, and we encourage everyone to participate. Presenting sponsors of iConference 2012 include NSF and Microsoft Research.

Conference - CCI Symposium

http://www.cci-icc.gc.ca/e-news/view_e.aspx?a=359be91

Adhesives and consolidants are important components of almost every
conservation treatment. Symposium 2011 will bring together
conservators and scientists from around the world to share their
practical and theoretical knowledge about the use of adhesives and
consolidants in all areas of conservation. The program will include a
mix of lectures, posters, tours, and demonstrations, along with
stimulating discussions. The information presented at the symposium
will help participants to make better-informed choices of adhesives
and consolidants for treatment applications.

Symposium 2011 is being hosted by the Canadian Conservation Institute
in partnership with Library and Archives Canada. It will be held at
395 Wellington Street, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, from October 17 to 21,
2011. The papers/talks will be presented in English or French with
simultaneous translation.

Preliminary Program
The preliminary lists of speakers, poster presenters, and
demonstrators are now available. Abstracts will be posted online in

Workshop on Preservation Policy-based Infrastructure for Digital Library Research Environments

Workshop on Preservation Policy-based Infrastructure for Digital Library Research Environments

Thursday, June 16th, 1:30 - 4:45 p.m.

The ACM/IEEE Joint Conference for Digital Libraries (JCDL)

Ottawa, Canada

Digital libraries provide scholars with the opportunity to conduct research in new research environments. Supporting evolving technologies, scholarship needs, and research requirements over the long term requires an efficient, flexible underlying infrastructure. The institutional support of such endeavors relies on the development of efficient data management policies which ensure trustworthiness and govern sustainability by attending to preservation components.

In conjunction with the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference for Digital Libraries, we are hosting a half-day workshop that explores both the practical and philosophical challenges at play in developing policy-based preservation infrastructures for digital library research environments. Our workshop will showcase approaches from different institutions, demonstrating successful models and practical approaches to policy development and automation.

Scheduled topics include:

* Practical approaches for policy development

* Mapping policies into machine-actionable rules

* Policy enforcement infrastructure and integration: The view from Fedora, DuraCloud, and Data Conservancy projects

* Linked data and interoperability for the digital library community. What institutional policies are needed for supporting data exchange over the long term? How can we collaborate on research environments across institutions?
