Conservation Summer Internship, University of Kansas Libraries, Lawrence, KS 40 hours per week; 8 week assignment (between May and September) $12.50 / hour Deadline for application is February 28, 2014 The University of Kansas is seeking applicants for its 2014 Summer Conservation Internship. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to undertake and complete a conservation project and gain insight into the workings of a dynamic preservation department. Conservation decision-making and documentation for library and archival collections will be stressed. The main summer project will focus on treatment of paper-based material from the World War I era. Other small projects may be added after agreement by the conservator and intern. Focus will be on special collections and archival materials. This summer internship is appropriate for highly motivated pre-program students with treatment experience, current students, and recent graduates of conservation training programs and their equivalents. Research Fellowship and Travel Grants - Robert J. Dole Archive

2013 Robert J. Dole Archive and Special Collections Research Fellowship and Travel Grants Established in 2010, these funding programs award grants to scholars engaged in projects studying Congress, politics, or policy issues. The Dole Archive and Special Collections at the Dole Institute of Politics houses Senator Bob Dole's extensive collections, which include his 36-year career in the House and Senate. While in residence, the Research Fellow and Travel Grant awardees will use these collections that provide extensive documentation on a wide range of legislative, historical, and policy issues. Research Fellowship Graduate students and post-doctoral scholars are eligible to apply for this $2,500 award, which supports substantial contributions to the study of Congress, politics, or policy issues on a national or international scale. The fellow will be required to conduct research at the Dole Archive for a period of 1-3 weeks between July 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014. Applications are due by March 15, 2013. Travel Grants The Travel Grant program is intended to defray costs associated with research-related travel to the Dole Institute. This program offers reimbursements of up to $750 to undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and independent scholars. Applications for travel grants are reviewed on a rolling basis. There is no deadline to apply and applications will be accepted until funds are exhausted. CFP - North American Data Documentation Initiative User Conferenc

The first annual North American Data Documentation Initiative User Conference (NADDI2013) will take place on April 2nd and 3rd, with an opening night reception on April 1st, at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. NADDI is based on the successful European DDI User Conference (EDDI), now in its fourth year. The NADDI2013 call for papers is now open. We are looking for presentations related to DDI (http://www.ddialliance.org): the use of DDI in research settings, archives, or in official statistics organizations; papers on DDI tools, or critiques of DDI. This year’s symposium topic is “Taming the Object Nightmare: Introduction to Object Care.” Whether we like it or not, we all have objects in our collections. The question is, “what do we do with them?” This year’s symposium is intended to help you care for these objects to museum standards in the most efficient ways possible. This symposium will focus on textiles, plastics, and framed objects. If you have any specific types of textiles, plastics, or framed objects in your collection, please make sure to mention them in your RSVP. Speakers Paul Goudy, speaking on textiles, is currently the Records Manager/Archivist for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County. He has 28 years of experience as a director, curator and archivist at small and medium sized museums. Goudy’s training includes an internship at the Smithsonian, adjunct employment at the British Museum, and two seminars with the National Trust. Whitney Baker, discussing plastics, is the Head of Conservation Services for KU Libraries. She previously worked in conservation at the Library of Congress and the University of Kentucky. Baker teaches MUSE 706, Conservation Principles and Practices, for the KU Museum Studies program. On sabbatical in 2011, she conducted extensive research into the history and development of bumper stickers. Peggy Van Witt, talking about framed objects, is a third generation paintings conservator and works in private practice in Kansas City. Through the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC), of which she is Professional Associate, she has deepened her expertise through intensive workshops like Mastering in Painting, Adhesives for Conservation, Modular Cleaning workshops and Early European Paintings at Yale University. Research Fellowship (2012)
Graduate students and post-doctoral scholars are eligible to apply for
this one-time $2,500 award which will support substantial contributions
to the study of Congress, politics or policy issues. Applications for
the 2012 Dole Institute Research Fellowship are due on or before
March 15, 2012.

Travel Grants
The travel grant program is intended to defray costs associated with
research related travel to the Dole Institute. This program will offer
reimbursements of up to $750 to students, post-doctoral researchers and
independent scholars. Applications are currently being accepted and will
be awarded on an on-going basis.

About the Archives
Sen. Bob Dole was elected to Congress in 1961, serving three terms
before being elected to the Senate in 1968. Dole served as Chairman of
the Republican National Committee 1971-1973, Senate Majority Leader
1985-1987, 1995-1996 and Senate Minority Leader 1987-1995. The Dole
Archive is one of the largest groupings of political materials outside
the Presidential library system. Inventories for processed

The Consumer Movement Archives (CMA) at Kansas State University is providing an exciting research opportunity for scholars and graduate students by offering a $2,500 annual award to study the consumer movement.
