Please Note: Students @ Work Internships are paid at minimum-wage and structured to last approximately 12 weeks. Program dates are June 6th – August 12th. Course Credit is available. Resume is required. Students should have a strong academic record (3.0 strongly preferred). Students must have completed their sophomore year in college prior to the start of the internship. In addition, students may not have graduated college or graduate school prior to the start of the internship (i.e. STUDENTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN SCHOOL DURING THE TIME OF THIS INTERNSHIP). Students seeking college credit are strongly encouraged to apply. Note to International Students: All international students will be required to provide documentation of proper visa paperwork prior to your arrival if accepted to the program.

Department:

The CNN Library functions as both as a research center and video archive, and supports worldwide newsgathering and production for CNN networks and web sites, as well as other Turner companies.

The CNN Library develops, manages, and stores video in an expanding variety of formats; provides access to our video collections using appropriate storage, access, and computer technologies; preserves the video for future use; and assists in the use of library resources (circulation and archive systems). Additionally, the library provides information research in support of news production needs, utilizing the most current technologies available – Lexis-Nexis, Factiva, the Internet, and other online subscriptions. We also maintain a basic print collection consisting of reference books, magazines, and newspapers.

Internship Description:

An information research intern will participate in various information research-based projects, using a variety of authoritative online databases, as well as traditional reference sources, web tools, and the internet. The intern will also help on our information reference desk, providing information research to CNN news staffing in a fast-paced environment.

A video intern will work with our archive collection through detailed indexing of footage selected for archiving, on other long-term video-related projects, and also help on our video reference desk, providing video research to CNN news staff in a fast-paced environment. Candidates with content/media management experience and news production experience highly desired.

Required Qualifications/Skills:
Students must currently be enrolled in and pursuing a Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Sciences (MLS or MLIS).

Candidates should have an interest in variety of areas including journalism and should be a highly motivated self-starter who is detail-oriented and adaptable to a changing work environment. Ability to work independently and creatively and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously a must. Effective written and verbal communication skills are a top priority.
