Position: Archives Technician Internships –2 available

Duration: One 20 week (800 hours) internship and One 10 week (400 hours) internship

Salary: A stipend of $12.00/hour. Income taxes are not withheld and are the responsibility of the intern(s).

Schedule: Estimated start date is May 24, 2010, although there is some flexibility depending on student availability and course schedule. Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, scheduling is somewhat flexible.

Job Summary: Interns will work at the South Florida Collections Management Center (SFCMC) which manages the 5.1 million objects, specimens and archival documents from Big Cypress National Preserve, Biscayne National Park, De Soto National Memorial, Dry Tortugas National Park, and Everglades National Park. Working with the Museum Curator and Archivist, interns will process, arrange, catalog, and document museum archival collections to National Park Service (NPS) standards. Interns will prepare processing plans and finding aids. Interns will prepare, maintain, and organize manual and automated curatorial records, including accession records, catalog records, and inventories using the NPS Interior Collections Management System (ICMS). Interns will conduct routine preventive conservation including rehousing collections, environmental monitoring, museum housekeeping, and Integrated Pest Management. Carries out assignments and follows directions according to NPS policy and procedures.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess education in museum studies or archives management. Attention to detail and a willingness to learn are important. Applicants must have experience in using a variety of computer software, and the ability to present oral and written information in a clear and concise manner to complete cataloging and collection documentation. A valid driver’s license is required for this position. Applicants must be enrolled students and US citizenship is required.

Area Information: The South Florida Collections Management Center (SFCMC) is located approximately 8 miles inside Everglades National Park, near Homestead, Florida. Winters are mild and summers in Florida are hot and humid. Limited park housing (shared accommodation) is available and the cost is the responsibility of the intern. Rental units are available in Homestead and Florida City. A youth hostel which permits extended stays in the summer is available in Florida City. No public transportation is available between local communities and the park. Therefore interns will need to have a vehicle during the internship.
